Awa Dabo Appointed as UN Deputy Human Rights Chief

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Awa Dabo of Gambia as the new Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN confirmed Monday in an official statement.

Dabo steps into the role vacated by Nada Al Nashif of Jordan, whom both Guterres and the High Commissioner for Human Rights recognized for her distinguished tenure — notably her steady leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic, the turbulent financial crisis that followed, and her contributions toward advancing UN "management and partnership reform priorities."

According to the statement, Dabo arrives with a deep and multifaceted professional background spanning human rights, crisis recovery, peacebuilding and conflict prevention, humanitarian affairs, and development — credentials that position her as a formidable force in the role.

Most recently, she served as Director and Deputy Head of the UN Peacebuilding and Peace Support Office. Prior to that, Dabo held senior leadership positions within the UN Development Programme (UNDP), including as Country Director in Tanzania. Her UN career also encompasses significant stints with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights — giving her a sweeping institutional knowledge of the organization's most critical humanitarian and rights-focused bodies.
